Rachel James is
a young British designer, graduating from the Fashion Design BA course from the
University of Westminster, that has an extraordinary talent.
Her first
collection is called Granny Flower/Man Power and it takes inspiration from 70’s
working class Britain through the photography of Tony Ray Jones. She was drawn to the common references to
florals in day to day life: in particular in the womenswear and the
wallpapers of the homes; the bright bold clashing colour schemes and the moody
strong men living in this ‘70s world.
Rachel loves pattern cutting,
understanding construction and 3D shapes, too. For this reason she decide to
created floral prints by herself, she said “ I scanned in tiny
pressed flowers at a high resolution, blew up the scale and created digital
prints in my own bright colour palette”. At the end everything was perfect: the
fit, the silhouette and the way they moved. When Rachel works she loves
listening to chilled and instrumental music. Her favorite song right now is
“Welcome to my World” by Man Like Nells, but she loves the silky soul sounds of
new band Hawk House in ‘Chill Pill’ too.
What is included in the collection?
Her collection is full of amazing
pieces: big crazy printed coats that are waterproof with velcro, zips and
plenty of pockets, embroidered shorts that can be altered and fitting with
drawn in tabs and poppers in the waistline, printed leather tops to look like
boxy t shirts, an oversized hand knitted jumper with authentic Arran wool, and
fitted shirts with a plethora of wallpaper-inspired floral fabrics that were
extended to become shirt-dresses to bring the wallpaper into modernity.
Why make a collaction so colorful,
overside and hard to bring?
Having looked at ‘70s vintage
wallpaper where the colours were more drab and antiqued, ! wanted to make it
modern so brightened all the colours up to make it current. I wanted
to create a collection that men would enjoy wearing: it’s a collection for
Spring/Summer and I always like to make clothes more colourful when the sun
comes out. Il wanted the collection to be exciting and fun and therefore the
men that choose to wear it want luxurious clothing that isn’t too serious:
that’s casual and oversized and creative. I wanted them to be strong but simple
silhouettes - which is a recurring theme in my work.
Why create a men's collection?
I think menswear is incredibly
exciting right now. Men are more creative and interested than lots of
fashion brands currently give them credit for. I feel there is a real gap
in the industry for high-end casual menswear that’s exciting, modern, creative
but real and beautifully made. I think we will see more experimental
menswear with a higher demand from men who want more excitement from
their clothing. I think there is a gap between the super crazy and the
super traditional while being luxurious and I would love to be a menswear
designer who can design bringing the two design concepts closer together.
What kind of man could wear your
clothes?
The collection may not be for the
faint hearted but that in itself shows the kind of men that should be wearing
my clothes: the bold, confident, well-dressed, creative man.
What other people think of your
collection?
So far I have been really overwhelmed and flattered by
the amount of excitement and support I have had from the fashion press and the
general public. I only joined twitter a few weeks ago and it makes me so
happy to see how quickly people are following me and sending me messages of
praise or asking when production is being launched.
Where you can buy it?
As in the collection? I am currently having a
website built which should be going live shortly and you will be able to
purchase commercial garments of the collection on there. Watch my twitter
feed for more info!
Thanks a lot Rachel for this interview.
sugli abiti. Quando Rachel lavora sui suoi abiti ama ascoltare musica
strumentale. La sua canzone preferita è “Welcome to my World” di Man Like
collezioni “super crazy” e quelle tradizionali.
I miei abiti
pubblico in generale.
mia collezione sarà in vendita.
Dove possiamo acquistare la tua
collezione?
Il mio sito è al momento in
costruzione, ma presto sarà online.
